Position: Sunny or shady wall
Soil: Well prepared humusy soil
Flowering Period: July - Aug
Hardiness: Hardy
Eventual Height:
A beautiful and scarce hydrangea relative that once established makes a magnificent specimen for a sunny wall or up a tree. Similar to Hydrangea petiolaris (but more aristocratic), it will attach itself by aerial roots, with handsome hairy ovate foliage and large (sometimes huge) flower heads in July. There are beautiful specimens against the wall at Wakehurst Place in Sussex and Roy Lancaster's home in Hampshire. Can be slow at first but then gets going so best to start with a strong young plant. Introduced by Ernest Wilson from rocky cliffs in Szechwan ( Sichuan), China in1901. Very desirable and special.
