I love watsonias, vibrant bright African colours. Best of all except in the coldest of winters they are evergreen and make strong clumps.
Once upon a time it was thought you could only grow watsonias in the South-West but some years ago mthey started appearing at Wakeshurst Place and Kew to name a few. They are one of the plants that are well suited to climate change as it gets warmer and moister. This particular form was collected by a chap called James Hitchmough a Professor of ecology at Sheffield University. I went to a talk by him some years ago, very interesting and he has utilised many South African plants and prairie plants for mass planting. He's written some good books too. Anyhow this is a watsonia he collected at a higher altitude in South Africa and it does ok in Sheffield. It's not easy to kill a watsonia....except deep shade (I found out) but you can always put some bark down iaround the clumps if it makes you feel better. Vivid orange-red flowers in June through to mid August. Please try watsonias, Christopher Lloyd would have loved them! .Strong 2litre plants
