Found in the Eastern Cape of South Africa the species rooperi is the one that makes such an impression when seen in gardens. Magnificent, huge tubby flowers start out as orange-red then turn the characteristic 'poker' orange and yellow in different shades. Striking, large, evergreen leaves arch out in majestic fashion and the whole plant seems to defy the oncoming autumn and even the beginning of winter. Excellent contrasts as suggestions to surround the impressive clump are exciting, colourful dahlias (especially dark foliaged forms), Crocosmia 'Lucifer' and others and the sunshine- yellow blooms of heliopsis or rudbeckias.
